A MAN accused of being part of the alleged syndicate that robbed the Dahwe Chrome Mine, owned by a Chinese national, of US$120,000 appeared in magistrates’ court yesterday on charges of armed robbery.

Taurai Pangai (33) appeared before Harare district magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa and remanded him in custody until November 19 on routine remand after the State indicated he was facing a serious offence.

He was advised to apply to the High Court for bail.

Prosecutor Lancelot Mutsokoti alleged that on August 27 this year, Pangai, along with 11 suspected accomplices, drove to San He Mining Company’s Dahwe Chrome Mine in a gray Mazda BT50, where they roughed up several mine workers and confiscated all their mobile phones. cutting off all communication.

Mutsokoti also claimed that a mine worker was attacked to force him to show suspected robbers where the Chinese mine owners resided.

The court heard that when they arrived at the Chinese residence, three of the armed robbers pointed firearms at the owners, who were in the dining room.

The suspected robbers also seized the accountant’s mobile phones before entering his bedroom and tied him up with ropes while demanding money.

According to court documents, Pangai and his accomplices stole $120,000 from the accountant’s bed.

It was claimed that the robbers fired a single shot into the air to scare the crowd who were about to save Chinese citizens.

They also stole the mine’s white Toyota Hilux GD-6 Revo motor vehicle, which they used as a getaway car.

The stolen motor vehicle was later dumped in the Zanado area of ​​the Concession by the police after a long chase.

However, on October 3 this year, detectives received information that led to Pangai’s arrest and the recovery of the Toyota Allion he had purchased using his share of the loot.
