NASA recently issued a warning for two large asteroids approaching Earth, with closest approach expected today (October 30, 2024). While the space agency frequently observes such space objects, these two asteroids stand out due to their size and the relatively close distance at which they will pass by Earth.

Basic details of two asteroids

  • The first asteroid, identified as 2023 XY, measures approximately 190 feet in diameter, comparable to the size of a commercial airliner.
  • The second asteroid, identified as 2023 XR, is approximately 270 feet in diameter and falls into the category of larger near-Earth objects.

Despite their significant size, NASA has confirmed that both will remain a safe distance from Earth.

Safe distances: No need to panic

Although both asteroids are astronomically close to each other, they will still pass safely by Earth, several million kilometers away. NASA’s continuous monitoring of near-Earth objects (NEOs) allows it to evaluate and predict asteroid paths, and there are no impacts or risks expected from these two asteroids today. The agency uses its data to reassure the public that these objects do not pose an immediate danger.

Monitoring and future precautions

NASA’s warning system for NEOs helps prepare for possible future risks, even if they are minimal. Thanks to advanced tracking and monitoring systems, scientists can predict the movement of such asteroids, reducing the likelihood of unexpected threats. This warning serves as a reminder of NASA’s vigilance and the importance of ongoing research into planetary defense.
